A probationary officer with the Porter County Sheriff’s Department for less than one year has been fired after a weekend arrest for operating while intoxicated, Sheriff Jeff Balon said.

Around 1:52 a.m. Sunday, a Valparaiso Police officer made a traffic stop on a 2021 Ford SUV in the 200 block of Center Street in Valparaiso, according to a statement from Balon.

Through the course of the stop, the officer found probable cause that the driver was operating while intoxicated.

The driver was identified as Ty Bonnell, 25, of Porter. According to jail records, Bonnell was taken into custody on four preliminary misdemeanor counts related to operating while intoxicated.

After reviewing the facts of the incident and because of Bonnell’s probationary status, he was terminated Sunday morning, Balon said.

Bonnell has since bonded out of Porter County Jail; he had not been formally charged as of Monday morning, per online court records.

According to a Facebook post from the sheriff’s department, Bonnell graduated from the Northern Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in May.
