FARM BUREAU HOSTING MEETING ON PROPERTY TAX CHANGES

Lake County Farm Bureau, Inc. will host a free, public information meeting at 7 p.m. on Sept. 30 to help Lake County residents better understand Indiana’s Senate Enrolled Act 1 (SEA 1) and its impact on property taxes and locally funded services. The meeting will take place at the Tri-Creek District Administration Office, 2055 E. Commercial Ave., Lowell. The public is encouraged to attend. SEA 1 made significant changes to Indiana’s property tax system. For homeowners, farmers and business owners, those changes can affect more than an individual tax bill; they also influence the property tax revenue available to schools, libraries, fire protection and other local taxing units. The presentation will address how SEA 1 changed Indiana’s property tax structure, how personal and real property taxes are affected, what the changes mean for locally funded entities and what Indiana Farm Bureau anticipates may receive attention during future legislative sessions. Following Hoff’s presentation, Dr. Andy Anderson, superintendent of Tri-Creek School Corp., will be available to answer questions about how the property tax changes have affected Tri-Creek Schools. The discussion comes as Tri-Creek voters prepare to consider an operating referendum during the Nov. 3 general election. Lake County Farm Bureau emphasizes that the Sept. 30 meeting is strictly educational and informational and is not intended to promote, oppose or influence the outcome of the Tri-Creek Schools referendum. VALPARAISO HOLDING TREE PLANTING EVENTS

The city of Valparaiso invites residents to participate in two neighborhood tree planting events this fall. The plantings, planned and organized by residents of the Jessee-Pifer and Jefferson Park neighborhoods, are funded through the city’s Neighborhood Improvement Grant program. Together, the projects will add approximately 50 new trees to neighborhood streets and public spaces. The Jefferson Park Neighborhood Tree Planting Event will take place at 10 a.m. Oct. 3, gathering at 200 East Park. Supported by a $3,000 Neighborhood Improvement Grant, the project will result in the planting of 19 to 22 trees. The Jessee-Pifer Neighborhood Tree Planting Event will take place at 10 a.m. Oct. 10, gathering at Jessee-Pifer Park, 400 Elmhurst Ave. Supported by a $5,000 Neighborhood Improvement Grant, 28 to 32 trees will be planted throughout the neighborhood. Jessee-Pifer’s planting is particularly significant as the neighborhood continues its long-term commitment to replacing trees. During the past decade, approximately 117 trees have been lost in the neighborhood, while more than 100 have been replanted. This fall’s planting will help fill many of the remaining available locations for medium- and large-species trees on city-owned property. Neighborhood residents will play an important role in the long-term success of the projects, with many residents agreeing to water newly planted trees in the public right-of-way during their first two growing seasons.
