After a weekend that brought more September rain to parts of Chicago than had been seen in seven years, residents can expect light rain and cloudy skies over the next few days, weather officials said.

Forecasters expected Monday to be drizzly, according to Gino Izzi, senior meteorologist at the National Weather Service. Izzi also said the rain Saturday and Sunday was the most O’Hare International Airport has reported in two days during September since 2019. Saturday rainfall was 0.86 inches, and Sunday rainfall was 1.21 inches, weather officials recorded.

Tuesday would start cloudy, Izzi said, and then gradually clear up throughout the day. In stark contrast, Sunday saw heavy rainfall that canceled an open-water swim in the Chicago River and brought the southwest suburban McCook Reservoir to 95% capacity.

The weekend storms also led to the early closure of Riot Fest Saturday night and delayed its reopening until Sunday afternoon. Many festivalgoers wore ponchos and hiked over mud that had blanketed Douglass Park.

Conditions at Chicago’s Midway Airport Monday morning were 59 degrees and overcast. It was 62 degrees at O’Hare International Airport and also overcast.
