A man who police say stole a vehicle and attempted an armed holdup at an Orland Park gas station has been charged, though remains in stable condition after he was shot in the cheek by a patron.

Orland Park police said Christopher Brown, 20, stole a gun and vehicle from Michigan City, Indiana, before attempting to steal from a man who was pumping gas at the West 151st Street and Harlem Avenue Shell station Tuesday morning.

Brown was masked and pointing a gun at the patron, who shot him once in the cheek, police said. Orland Park police did not name the patron in a news release Thursday but said he was an Illinois concealed carry license holder and was not injured.

Brown ran away but was stopped in the parking lot by police once they responded, at about 9 a.m, police say. He remains in stable condition at a hospital under police guard and has been charged with attempted armed robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a stolen firearm and two counts aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm.

Police say during their investigation, they found the gun and vehicle Brown possessed was reported stolen in Michigan City. They conducted interviews with those involved and multiple witnesses.
