Heavy smoke and flames billowed on the city’s West Side Friday afternoon as fire crews battled a rubbish fire in a metal salvaging yard.

The fire broke out at the facility in the 4700 block of West Division Street in Austin around 3:50 p.m., a Chicago Fire Department spokesperson said. Public records show the fire occurred on property belonging to Windy City Iron & Metal.

As of 4:30 p.m., crews were still working to extinguish the blaze, which was described as a rubbish fire, the spokesperson said.

No injuries were immediately reported. It was unclear how the fire broke out
