A Hazel Crest woman was charged with reckless homicide after a Labor Day weekend crash that killed a 6-month-old baby boy and injured four toddlers on Interstate 57 in Harvey, Illinois State Police said.

On Sept. 6, shortly after 5:45 p.m., police responded to a crash on northbound I-57 near 147th Street near Harvey where a red Ford SUV driven by LaTasha Hope drove off the roadway and struck a pole, state police said.

Hope, the infant and four toddlers were taken to an area hospital with injuries. None of the children were in car seats, police said.

The 6-month-old, who lived in Englewood, was pronounced dead at Ingalls Memorial Hospital the same night, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Hope was later charged with felony reckless homicide, aggravated driving under the influence causing a death, and child endangerment resulting in death, police said.

Hope was released from the hospital and taken into custody pending her first court appearance, police said.
