A third person has been charged in connection with the 2024 killing of a United States Postal Service letter carrier on the Far South Side, authorities announced Wednesday.
Lyndell Deyoung, 35, faces two counts of murder in the July 19, 2024, shooting death of Octavia Redmond, 48, in the 12100 block of South Harvard Avenue, according to Chicago police. Deyoung was scheduled to make his initial court appearance Wednesday.
“Through the course of the detectives’ investigation, a witness related that Lyndell Deyoung was the offender who planned the murder of Octavia Redmond,” Deyoung’s arrest report states. “Cellphone records also indicate his involvement and planning/arranging of the murder.”
In October 2024, a 15-year-old boy was also charged in the killing. The Postal Service said at the time that the teen “exited a stolen white Dodge Durango, approached Redmond in the vicinity of South Harvard Avenue and West 122nd Street, and shot Redmond multiple times at close range.”
The teen pleaded guilty last month and was sentenced to five years in the Cook County Juvenile Center.
The day after the shooting, Chicago police investigators found the stolen vehicle burned out on the South Side. Another man was charged with arson in connection with the vehicle fire. Court records show he pleaded guilty to arson last month and was sentenced to one year of probation.
Those who lived near the shooting scene previously described Redmond as a good-natured and friendly mail carrier.
