A vacant apartment building on the East Side of Aurora was extensively damaged by a fire in the early hours of Thursday morning, according to the Aurora Fire Department.

The city of Aurora’s telecommunications dispatch center received the initial report at around 12:53 a.m. on Thursday, which indicated that an abandoned building in the 1600 block of Northeast Drive was on fire, the Aurora Fire Department said in a news release.

Police officers arriving at the scene found flames breaking through the roof of a former Aurora Housing Authority apartment building, the news release said. Fire crews arrived shortly afterward and found significant fire involvement throughout the second floor.

Crews conducted searches of the eastern units on the first and second floors, the fire department said, but were unable to safely search the western units due to the extensive fire damage, including floor and roof failure. Firefighters then used a ladder truck to bring the fire under control using aerial capabilities.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Aurora Fire Department investigators.
