At a certain point, a shoe store starts running out of room for shoes. Especially if it has an ambitious owner who loves his city, like Sebastian Malczewski. That’s why his Chicago footwear brand, Marc Nolan, has traded its snug West Loop digs for a bigger, design-forward space next door, outfitted with wood paneling, marble details, and enough room to showcase its latest venture: apparel. What began in 2018 as solely a men’s shoe line — named for Malczewski’s son, Nolan, and a mentor named Marc — has expanded into women’s styles, leather goods, and a debut collection of elevated streetwear. “But we don’t want to just sell,” says Malczewski, a Polish immigrant. To that end, shoppers may encounter wine tastings, vinyl-listening sessions, and community gatherings — all proof that Malczewski is eager to evolve. 171 N. Sangamon St.
