Secondhand shopping is booming as thrifters look for sustainable and wallet-friendly ways to elevate both their wardrobes and homes. With 3,000 new pieces hitting Chicagoland Goodwill Store & Donation Centers daily, there’s a good chance of stumbling upon extraordinary finds like clothing featured in movies or rare collectible toys from childhood. Beyond scoring incredible treasure, every purchase supports job training and community programs that directly impact local residents.
Whether on the West Side or far Southwest Side of Chicago, there is bound to be a Goodwill store nearby. But no two are exactly alike. Each location has its own distinct personality, architectural vibe and daily inventory refreshes. Why visit just one store when you can shop them all?
For the die-hard sports fan and pop-culture fanatic: Grand Avenue

Opened in April 2025 in a former trolley car repair facility, built in 1916 as the Machine Shop, the newest Goodwill location in Chicago is home to more than 11,000 square feet of thrift shopping space. While the paint and lighting are new, the original exposed timbers, brick and industrial windows offer a look and feel that honors the building’s rich history.
Stepping into the store’s vestibule, customers are immediately surrounded by a colorful custom art piece and mural by local artist Alecks Cruz, each one paying homage to thrift culture and the West Town neighborhood. And being just a mile away from the United Center, the store has dedicated an entire wall to curated displays tailored to the city’s many sports teams, major events and concerts. For the non-sports fans, expect to see a ton of home decor, wall art, active wear and dresses.
Store manager Dustin Kucharski likens Grand Avenue to a giant boutique, combining the diverse selection of a large retail space with personalized customer service. “It’s important to our team that we build trust with our community through one-on-one conversations that help identify shopper’s individual needs while creating a welcoming environment,” he says. “We want shoppers to feel a direct connection to contributing to Goodwill’s mission each time they visit.”
Holy grail find: A donation of vintage WWF/WWE wrestling tees and event collectibles from WrestleMania 13, held at the Rosemont Horizon (now Allstate Arena) in 1997.
Shopper tip: Visit on the weekend to see groups of thrifters turn their shopping into an all-day outing.
For the art and high-fashion lover: Avondale

Along with 9,000 square feet of shopping space, this bright and modern location is home to Goodwill’s only heated drive-through donation center in the city. A high turnover of top-tier fashion, gently used clothing and wall art have made the Goodwill in Avondale a favorite among local high schoolers, college students and families, says store manager Anita Kowalik.
Not unlike Western Avenue, Avondale usually has 10-15 people waiting at the door before opening. One of these customers is likely to be Oscar Olazcoaga, who has made the Avondale Goodwill part of his morning ritual. On most days when his overnight banking shift ends at 7:30 a.m., he takes the train to the store and traverses the aisles for comic books, paintings, cleaning supplies and dress clothes that he says he wouldn’t normally buy full price.
“One time I came in, they had a fixie bike for $50, and it was the best thing I ever found in there,” Olazcoaga says. “It actually got me into the biking life that I have now.”

Holy grail find: Wall art (framed movie posters and pieces made by residents) and a donation of an iconic wedding dress from “Sex and the City,” bought for just $18.99.
Shopper tip: Head to the store on the 1st or 15th of the month, when renters tend to donate boxes of clothes and household items before moving.
For the antique collector and trend-setter: Western Avenue

A cozy store with exposed brick interior, the Goodwill on Western Avenue is a neighborhood favorite, with eager shoppers lining up outside the doors 10 minutes before opening.
“A lot of our customers are regulars, so we know most of them by their first name,” says store manager Donald Montgomery. “It’s a real chill vibe, like family every day.”
Among a popular and diverse selection of footwear, high-end kitchen appliances and scrubs (of which there are plenty, since the store is near a medical district), seasoned thrifters can dig through a treasure trove of rare antiques like Victorian teapots as well as vintage handbags at staggeringly low prices. Loyal shopper Theresa Bradford, a longtime thrifter who visits the store at least every other day, recently found a designer purse for just $30.
“It’s unbelievable how thrift store stuff can make you feel,” says Bradford, whose wardrobe is 90% Goodwill-donated. “It’s like a high that you will never come down from, and you’re always chasing that feeling from when you’ve found something so spectacular.”
Holy grail finds: A donated set of vintage Japanese Transformers toys.
Shopper tip: Chat with the staff. Western Avenue is known for its warm customer service where regulars are greeted by name.
