
BETTY BROWN TO BE HONORED BY YWCA ELGIN
YWCA Elgin will honor philanthropist and civil rights trailblazer Betty Brown with its Legacy Award during its 125th celebration from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at Carmina’s Banquet, 1055 N. Randall Road, Elgin.
Brown has been involved with YWCA Elgin initiatives for decades, according to a news release.
She was the first Black nursing student at St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Joliet and worked as a nurse and supervisor at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. Brown also became a writer, magazine publisher, civic leader, mentor and etiquette instructor, according to the release. For many years she wrote a society column, “Stepping Out with Betty Brown,” for The Courier-News.
Brown previously received YWCA Elgin’s Marguerite Henry Communications & Technology Award. The nonprofit’s Betty Brown Racial Justice Award is named in her honor.

CHORALE OFFERING ECC SUMMER SINGING ACADEMY
Elgin Master Chorale will offer its Summer Singing Academy from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, Aug. 18-20, at the Spartan Auditorium, Room H123, in the Elgin Community College Arts Center, 1700 Spartan Drive.
Classes are open to anyone from longtime choral singers to those looking to build vocal confidence, according to a social media post. Sessions will be led by Elgin Master Chorale Music Director Andrew Lewis and members of the chorale’s staff.

.SENIOR EXPO SET FOR AUG. 19 AT RAKOW CENTER
State Sen. Don DeWitte, R-St. Charles, will host a senior expo from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Aug. 19, at the Dundee Township Park District Rakow Center, 665 Barrington Ave., Carpentersville.
Dozens of vendors will be present to talk about programs for seniors, according to DeWitte’s website, and legislative brochures will be available at the free event. Light refreshments will be served.

FAMILY FISHING DAY ON AUG. 22 IN WEST DUNDEE
Dundee Township Park District’s family fishing day will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at William Aldis Sr. Park, located at Maiden Lane and First Street in West Dundee.
Families taking part should register for 30-minute fishing sessions per family, according to the park district’s website. Those who register will get a fishing spot and instruction. The district will provide equipment, or participants may bring their own.
Children taking part will receive a tackle box holding bobbers, lures and other items. The morning will also feature games, crafts, giveaways, prizes and a lunch with hot dogs, chips and soft drinks provided.
The fee to take part is $6 per family for Dundee Township residents and $8 for nonresident families. Registration is required by noon Friday, Aug. 21. Fishing licenses are required for anyone 16 or older.

NESS HOSTING TOWN HALL AT ELGIN LIBRARY
State Rep. Suzanne Ness, D-Crystal Lake, is holding a town hall meeting from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.
“As summer starts to die down and we transition from community events to gearing up for a fall legislative session in the next few months, it’s more important than ever to create space for families to ask questions, share concerns and stay informed on issues that affect them,” Ness said in a news release.
