The Lake County Sheriff’s Department transferred an additional $870,000 in July toward renovating the county’s shooting range and transferred $150,000 for fuel costs, which the Lake County Council approved Tuesday.
In June, the sheriff’s department requested a transfer of $890,722 toward renovating the indoor shooting range, which the council approved. The department has been given an estimate from range construction specialists that the project will cost between $1.5 and $1.9 million, said Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez in a statement.
The department does not plan to transfer any more funds toward the shooting range project, Martinez said.
“To be clear, the funds we are using came from our existing budget and from non-reverting funds. We are not requesting any additional appropriations or taxpayer dollars for this project,” Martinez said.
The department’s shooting range, which has been open since 1975, has older equipment and its ventilation, mechanical equipment, building structure and infrastructure “have reached end-of-life status and need to be replaced,” Martinez previously said.

The shooting range is used for state-mandated firearms training and qualification for police officers and by other county departments, including correctional officers, judges, bailiffs, court security officers and officers from other law enforcement agencies, Martinez previously said.
“The complete renovation of the shooting range is crucial to ensuring we have a safe and efficient training facility for all who use it,” Martinez previously said.
For the fuel cost transfer, Martinez said the county’s new fueling facility is under construction, and a temporary fueling system is in place until the new fueling facility is operational, which should be in the fall.
The transfer in fuel funds pays for the gas the sheriff’s department and all other departments use at the county pumps, Martinez said.
“When the new system is operational, police officers and employees who work for other county departments that use our fuel will have fuel fobs they can use to obtain fuel. The fobs will work as they have in the past and will track fuel usage,” Martinez said.
