Federal Emergency Management Agency officials will review damage in Porter County from the June 11 tornadoes and severe storms on Monday, according to a release.

An EF3 tornado hit Kouts that night, one of several Northwest Indiana and Chicago area communities struck by violent storms. An EF2 tornado also hit Merrillville, badly damaging Andrean High School.

The Porter County Emergency Management Agency has coordinated with the Indiana
Department of Homeland Security and FEMA to facilitate a review of damage to properties
throughout Porter County, according to a release from Lance Bella, Porter County’s emergency management director.

FEMA assessment teams will be escorted by Porter County Emergency Management
Agency personnel. Personnel from both agencies will be wearing clothing identifying them and will also carry government credentials, according to the release.

The data collected will assist FEMA in determining if a request will be made to President Donald Trump to consider releasing FEMA funds.

“We are trying to give Porter County residents every opportunity available to obtain assistance and restore their properties to normal. This is the next step of this process, Bella said in the release.
