A Gary man is facing multiple charges including murder for fatally shooting one man and wounding another on Sunday.

Juan Camarillo, 45, is charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery with a deadly weapon, intimidation, and criminal recklessness, court records state. Camarillo is also charged with a firearm enhancement.

He could potentially face up to 135 years in prison if convicted, according to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office.

Camarillo is being held in custody without bail. No attorney is listed as of yet, court records state.

On July 12, police were called out to the 5700 block of W. 6th Avenue, where two men had been shot, according to the probable cause affidavit. Frank Haney had been shot three times and was deceased.

Haney, 34, was pronounced dead at 8:27 p.m. Sunday at the Methodist Hospital Northlake emergency room, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office release.

When police arrived on scene, they were directed to the front yard, where two men were detaining Camarillo and two other men who had been shot were on the ground. The two men restraining Camarillo identified him as the shooter and pointed police toward the gun, records state.

One of the men on the ground had sustained a gunshot wound to the right shoulder, while the other man had three gunshot wounds to the abdomen.

While Camarillo was being assessed in an ambulance, he said his neighbors had shot at him and he was beaten and hit over the head with a brick, court records state. There was no evidence of him being shot at or hit with a brick, police said.

Police found five live rounds of ammunition in Camarillo’s left pocket, the affidavit states.

There were three spent casings on the sidewalk and in the yard, as well as two spent casings near an air conditioning unit. Police also recovered a Taurus 8mm handgun, a baseball cap and a shirt with what looked like blood, court records state.

A witness said Camarillo was homeless but staying temporarily at a nearby house. Before the shooting, Haney came to the witness’s door, saying Camarillo pulled a gun on him, records state. She confronted Camarillo about the incident, but when she told him that police may be called, Camarillo became angry, pulled out a gun and stated he was going to handle it right now.

He walked across the street to Haney’s house and began yelling at Haney’s dad, the affidavit states. He claimed he was telling Haney that he had his back, not threatening him. He kept yelling at Haney to tell the truth, then fired his gun into the ground, which caused a neighbor to call 911, court records state.

Haney and Camarillo started to fight and another man fell to the ground. Additional shots were heard and Haney’s relative came outside and disarmed and restrained Camarillo until police arrived, records state.

Ring video footage showed Camarillo engaging in an argument with people across the street, including him pulling out a gun and firing shots as muzzle flash is seen, the affidavit states. Haney appears to try to try and charge him to disarm him, but Camarillo runs out of view.

Police attempted to interview Camarillo but he requested an attorney, court records state. Body camera footage from an officer on scene shows Camarillo claiming he was jumped and his neighbors tried to shoot him, that he tried to get the gun from them and he didn’t own a gun due to a juvenile conviction. Police said all of his statements were fundamentally contradicted by the available evidence, records state.
