A judge ordered Devonta Hodge, 33, of Gary, Indiana, held in custody Thursday after he was charged with homicide in the fatal June 28 shooting of Dylan Perkins, 26, of Glenwood, outside the Amazon facility in Matteson.

“This was a senseless killing,” Cook County Judge Torrie Luciana Corbin wrote in the order.

Officers responded at 10:54 p.m. June 28 to a report of shots fired at the facility at Vollmer Road and Harlem Avenue, the Matteson Police Department said in a statement following the shooting, and found Perkins, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his torso.

Prosecutors said Perkins, a janitorial employee, was on his break with two other coworkers outside the facility when Hodge arrived to make a DoorDash delivery.

Perkins made “a joking comment about (Hodge’s) height” as he passed, prosecutors said, and, after Hodge completed his delivery, Perkins approached him as he was leaving, they said.

Hodge pushed Perkins away twice, then drew a gun and shot him multiple times before fleeing the scene, prosecutors said.

Perkins was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

Hodge “demonstrated emotional immaturity in how to resolve conflicts,” Corbin wrote, and “attempted to avoid responsibility by returning the vehicle he was driving to the owner and lying and saying the vehicle was missing.”

The full encounter was captured on surveillance cameras, and Hodge was quickly identified as the DoorDash driver assigned to the delivery, according to prosecutors.

Hodge was arrested June 30 when he arrived at the Matteson Police Department to meet with investigators, police said.

Hodge had a valid Firearm Owners Identification, but no concealed carry permit, and had a prior conviction for unlawful use of a weapon, prosecutors said.

“We’re saddened by this senseless act of violence and are focused on supporting our employees and the victim’s family during this difficult time,” Amazon public relations manager Jesus Garcia said in a statement following the shooting.

Hodge’s next court date is set for July 16 at the Markham courthouse.
