Authorities on Wednesday confirmed that a federal agent and a Chicago police officer who worked as part of a task force shot two people during an attempted robbery in south suburban Country Club Hills.

The Tuesday afternoon shooting near 189th Street and Loretto Lane occurred during a firearms trafficking operation that included Illinois State Police, the FBI and Chicago police, according to a spokesperson with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Around 5:30 p.m., an ATF agent and a task force officer fired shots “in response to an attempted armed robbery of undercover agents, striking two offenders,” ATF spokesperson Mark Kavanagh said in a statement.

The two offenders were taken into custody and transported to area hospitals, where their conditions were stabilized, Kavanagh said. Three others were also taken into custody at the scene.

A spokesperson with Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability confirmed that the shooting involved a Chicago officer, but provided no further details, saying the case remained under investigation.
