AUTHOR DISCUSSING BOOK ON JEWISH SCIENTIESTS
Author Joel Greenberg will discuss his book, “To Life: Jews Exploring Nature,” from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, at the Elgin Public Museum, 225 Grand Blvd. in Lords Park.
Greenberg’s book, which he wrote with Judith Winston, looks at eight Jewish scientists and the contributions each made to their respective fields, a social media post said. One chapter is devoted to notorious child murderer Nathan Leopold, who was also an ornithologist, according to the Rutgers University Press website.
In 1924, Leopold and Richard Loeb confessed to kidnapping then killing 14-year-old Bobby Franks in Chicago’s Kenwood neighborhood. Leopold was paroled in 1958.
According to Elgin Public Museum Director Sharry Blazier, Leopold moved to Puerto Rico and worked in ornithology. He visited Elgin on several occasions and donated some of his taxidermy to the museum.
Greenberg’s presentation is free. Copies of his book will be available for purchase.
