‘CRAYFISH MANIA’ AT CREEK BEND NATURE CENTER

Forest Preserve District of Kane County’s “Little Saplings: Crayfish Mania,” a program for 3- to 5-year-olds, will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 21, at Creek Bend Nature Center in LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles.

The session will explore the natural world through a variety of crayfish-related activities, according to a forest preserve district social media post. Stories, nature hikes, songs, games and crafts will be among the activities offered. Children must be accompanied by a caregiver.

U-46 RECOGNIZES ITS TOP HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES

The District U-46 School Board recognized 45 graduating seniors from the district’s five high schools at a Top 2 Percent ceremony held May 11.

Among the schools the graduates plan to attend are Harvard University, Yale University, Stanford University, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Northwestern University, Loyola University Chicago, DePaul University, University of Notre Dame and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, according to a news release.

The students were recognized included:

BLUFF SPRING FEN PRESENTATION AT ELGIN LIBRARY

“Brush Piles, Burning, and Butterflies: 40 Years of Habitat Restoration at Bluff Spring Fen” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.

The program will include current and historic images of Bluff Spring Fen and track the effort to transform the preserve into a prime example of a rare Illinois ecosystem, according to the library’s website.

It will also cover the plant and animal species that make the fen their home and Doug Taron, Chicago Academy of Sciences’ chief curator emeritus for the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, will discuss butterfly habitat conservation.

Bluff Spring Fen is a 170-acre preserve on the southeast side of Elgin. It includes wetlands, hill prairies and oak woodlands, and is home to numerous threatened and endangered species

SPORTS EXHIBIT OPENING AT ELGIN HISTORY MUSEUM

An opening reception for the new “Game On, Elgin: The Places and Players of Our City” exhibit at the Elgin History Museum will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 22.

The exhibition traces the city’s sports history by looking at the various venues and sports figures over the years via a collection of artifacts, according to the museum’s website.
