A suspect was seriously wounded by officers Monday night when an exchange of gunfire broke out with police in the South Chicago neighborhood, Chicago police said.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m., tactical officers responded to a call of a person with a gun in the 8200 block of South Shore Drive. The officers attempted to conduct an investigatory stop with a person matching the suspect’s description in the 3100 block of East 83rd Street. Police said the officers told the suspect to keep his hands visible, but an exchange of gunfire started.

The suspect was struck to the body after both officers discharged their weapons. Medical help was rendered to the suspect at the scene, and he was taken to UChicago Medicine where he was listed in serious condition, police said. The officers were both taken to a local hospital for observation, police said. A weapon was recovered at the scene.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the use of force during the shooting and both officers will be placed on administrative duty for 30 days.
