READING BY THE RIVER SET FOR SATURDAY

State Rep. Anna Moeller, D-Elgin, will host the fourth annual Reading by the River program from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 18, in the Kidspace at the Gail Borden Public Library in downtown Elgin.

Readers will include Moeller, Jorge Juarez from the Elgin Police Department, and Andrea Vargas and Karen Ceballos from Enriching Partnerships for Early Learning, according to a news release. The hour will feature stories in both English and Spanish.

Families attending the free event can learn about The Basics, an EPEL program that helps parents and caregivers build strong foundations for early childhood learning, the release said.

SOUTH ELGIN CANCELS RIVER CLEANUP EVENT

The South Elgin Parks and Recreation Department has canceled the village’s Earth Day-related cleanup event scheduled for Saturday, April 18.

With recent rains, the banks of the Fox River are soggy and deep, posing possible dangers for those trying to clean up trash in the areas of SEBA, County and Panton Mills parks, a statement from by the village said.

With other events scheduled in coming weeks, it’s unlikely the event will be rescheduled, officials said. However, South Elgin welcomes any group interested in temporarily adopting a park to clean up debris along the river’s edge once the waters recede.

ELGIN PUBLIC MUSEUM HOSTING AUTHORS EVENTS

Elgin Public Museum will hold author events on Saturday and Sunday, April 18-19.

At 2:30 p.m. Saturday, children’s book author Linda Bailey will read from her new environmentally-themed work, “Green is My Favorite Color.” Since it’s Earth Month, there will be a similarly-themed scavenger hunt as well as crafts and goodies, according to a news release. Regular admission rates apply.

At 4 p.m. Sunday, author Ed Bates will talk about his new book, “Running 10: The Story of the Elgin Valley Fox Trot,” which has been held for 48 years. The event is free because it is being held after museum hours.

The 49th Elgin Valley Fox Trot is set for Sunday, May 31, with the museum being one of 10 nonprofits that will benefit from proceeds in exchange for volunteering to oversee and marshal the event. Registration is open at elginfoxtrot.org.
