Edward Bass, 32, and Khalil Powell, 30, both of Chicago, are charged with first-degree murder in the Saturday shooting death of Latrell Williams, 30, of Alsip, the Oak Forest Police Department announced.
Judge Linzey Jones ordered both Bass and Powell to be held pending trial Tuesday at the Cook County courthouse in Bridgeview.
Williams was shot at about 5 p.m. Saturday while stopped at 167th Street and Cicero Avenue, police said. Police responding to a report of shots fired found Williams, who had been shot multiple times in the left side of his body and was receiving first aid from an off-duty medical professional.
Prosecutors said that Williams was stopped at the intersection when Powell and Bass pulled up next to him in the left-turn lane, and approximately six shots were fired into his car.
The other car then fled east on 167th Street toward Interstate 57, police said. Williams was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, but later died of his injuries, police said. Williams’ cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Prosecutors said the car, registered to Powell’s wife, was identified and tracked using surveillance footage.
On Sunday, the day after the shooting, Powell’s car was spotted in Blue Island at about 2 a.m., and was pursued by Illinois State Police for 15 miles, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said that while fleeing, Powell’s car reached speeds of 138 mph and the driver violated at least six stoplights. Eventually, the car stopped and Powell and Bass fled on foot before being arrested, prosecutors said.
Powell was charged with additional crimes including aggravated fleeing and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Prosecutors said that Powell is currently on parole for armed robbery.
Bass and Powell’s next court date is set for May 8.
