A second suspect has been arrested in connection with the October fatal shooting of a man at a birthday party in Ingleside, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

Oscar E. Arteaga, 18, of Round Lake Beach, was charged with weapons counts stemming from the killing of Alejandro Castaneda. Yurem Mejia-Gomez, 18, of the 300 block of Meadow Green Lane in Round Lake Beach was charged with murder in the days after the shooting, police said.

Authorities said Castaneda, a 19-year-old Round Lake resident, was at a party in Ingleside when he was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting. Police said an argument had broken out at the party, and a group of people left but subsequently drove by and opened fire.

Arteaga was charged as a result of the continuing investigation. He was taken into custody on Thursday and was expected to appear in court on four counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, police said.

Hit and run

A Cary man was charged with drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident after he struck a pedestrian near Barrington on March 16, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.

John Zurawski, 73, of the 300 block of Sterling Circle, was charged after police say he hit a Crystal Lake man near Illinois Route 22 and Kelsey Road.

Police were called to the intersection at about 11:10 p.m. and found the man, 33, with significant injuries. He was brought to a hospital and then transferred to Advocate Lutheran General in Park Ridge.

The man, police said, was apparently walking along the road when he was hit by a passing vehicle. Based on auto parts found at the scene, police said it appeared the vehicle was a Volkswagen Atlas that was likely headed west on Route 22.

Investigators used the Flock license plate reader system to identify a vehicle registered to Zurawski. They went to his address and said he was under the influence of alcohol.

“I am very proud of our team who were involved in this investigation,” Sheriff John Idelburg said. “Because of their strong investigative skills, they were able to quickly determine this was a hit-and-run crash, track down the offending vehicle, and hold the driver accountable for his reckless actions.

“Driving impaired is reckless, wrong, and dangerous, especially when there are many options available to get home safely with a sober driver,” he said.

The pedestrian was reported to be in stable condition.

Deputy hurt

A sheriff’s deputy sustained minor injuries when her squad car was struck by another vehicle in Gurnee, authorities said.

The officer was on patrol at about 10:45 p.m. on March 14 at the intersection of Illinois Route 21 and Grand Avenue when her squad car was struck by a vehicle that made a left turn into her path, police said.

The officer was taken to a hospital, and was treated for minor injuries and released. The other driver was not hurt, police said.

As police investigated the crash, three motorists drove around traffic control points set up at the crash site. Each was charged with DUI, police said.
