A Rush University Medical Center employee was critically injured in a drive-by shooting Monday morning in the Illinois Medical District, according to Chicago police and hospital officials.

The employee, 23, was parked on the 600 block of South Paulina Street at 5:24 a.m. when a dark colored sedan approached, and the occupants opened fire before fleeing the scene. The woman was shot multiple times and taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, according to police.

In an email statement, a Rush spokesperson wrote Rush Security was coordinating with Chicago Police “after an employee was the victim of an aggravated battery with a firearm” outside Armour Academic Center.

“The victim and their family are at the center of our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read. Wellness resources were being made available to staff following the incident.

No one was in custody as Belmont area detectives investigated.
