The two people stabbed during an incident at an Oswego Chick-fil-A restaurant early Wednesday morning were a delivery driver and contract maintenance worker, according to the Oswego Police Department.
New details are emerging following a stabbing incident in the early hours of Wednesday morning at the Chick-fil-A on the 2700 block of Route 34 in Oswego that left one dead and another hospitalized.
According to a preliminary investigation, it’s believed that a man broke through the restaurant’s back door and first attacked a delivery driver who was inside the restaurant at around 3:10 a.m., based on restaurant video surveillance footage, a news release from the police department said.
Then, at around 4:56 a.m., the man allegedly attacked a contracted maintenance worker who was outside the restaurant, according to the department. A witness who saw the attack called the police and, with the maintenance worker, subdued the alleged offender until officers arrived, police said.
The Chick-fil-A location doesn’t open to the public until 6:30 a.m. on Wednesdays. No restaurant employees were present at the time of the incident, according to the department.
The Oswego police arrived within four minutes of being dispatched, the news release noted, and took the suspect into custody. He was taken to the Oswego Police Department and remained in custody as of Wednesday evening.
After securing the suspect, officers began performing medical aid to the injured maintenance worker, according to past reporting. The Oswego Fire Protection District then arrived and took over administering aid to the individual, who was ultimately taken to a hospital for treatment.
Officers conducted a sweep of the restaurant and found the other person who was stabbed, a delivery driver, unresponsive, according to past reporting. Despite attempts to perform medical aid, the individual was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending formal identification by the Kendall County Coroner’s Office, the department said.
The maintenance worker sustained serious injuries, the police department said, but was in stable condition as of Wednesday evening. The witness was not injured, officials said.
The Kane County Bomb Squad inspected unclaimed property located close to the scene and determined there was no threat to public safety, per the police department. The Kendall County Major Crimes Task Force assisted with investigating and processing the scene, and the Kendall County Coroner’s Office also responded.
Police are still investigating a motive for the attacks, the department said, and are working with the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine criminal charges.
