Two people were shot and injured at the Walmart in the 2500 block of West 95th Street in Evergreen Park Wednesday afternoon, according to a police statement Wednesday night.
Evergreen Park police said in a statement they received calls of an active shooter around 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, after which they cleared the store and located the two victims with the assistance of other surrounding agencies.
Evergreen Park police Lt. Wendi Franklin said as of about noon Thursday the Walmart had not reopened. She said they hope to reopen Friday.
Police said they took a suspect in the shooting into custody Wednesday afternoon in the 9300 block of Country Club Drive after he fled on foot from the store. Officers reported the suspect is male but did not provide additional details.
Police also took the occupants of a grey Hyundai into custody and transported the vehicle to the police station Wednesday afternoon. Police reported that the suspect had arrived at the store in the vehicle, which fled the scene and was later located by police in the 800 block of West Marquette.

Both victims were transported to Christ hospital, according to a police statement Wednesday night. A 70-year-old female victim had a gunshot wound to the foot and was reported in good condition.
A 23-year-old male victim had multiple gunshots to the leg and was transported in unknown condition. Officers said the suspect exited a vehicle and chased after the male victim, while shooting, as he was walking into the store.
The situation is an ongoing investigation, police said. Police encouraged anyone with information to contact the Evergreen Park Police Department.
The store closure also caused some local confusion Wednesday night.
Over five vehicles arrived at the store at around 6 p.m. to complete online shopping orders for the company Spark, an app-based service for independent contractors to deliver orders from Walmart and other retailers.
According to three shoppers, the company was not aware that the store was closed, and the shoppers said they had to call customer service to let them know. The online orders were canceled.
“That’s why all these people are probably lined up here, they don’t know it’s closed,” Danneyal David, a Spark shopper, said Wednesday night.
A security worker at the store Wednesday night encouraged shoppers to leave. About two dozen cars were parked in the lot outside the store, as of about 6 p.m. Wednesday.
