Four District U-46’s high schools were vandalized last week by a large group who traveled in vehicles from building to building, U-46 officials said.

Exterior walls, district trucks and a trailer were marked with spray-painted grafitti and windows were broken at Elgin, Larkin, Streamwood and South Elgin high schools on Thursday, Sept. 18, U-46 spokeswoman Tara Burghart said. The group fled Bartlett High School before doing any damage when police arrived.

A repair estimate is still being tallied, Burghart said.

Efforts are underway to identify the people involved, using security camera footage and other means, she said.

“School District U-46 will not tolerate this kind of behavior, and if any of our students are found to be involved, they will be held accountable,” Burghart said.

Students will face serious school consequences if they are found to be responsible, according to the U-46 Student Code of Conduct, and criminal charges are possible. In this incident, consequences may include financial responsibility for the damages incurred, Burghart said.

The district is asking anyone with information about the vandalism to contact Elgin, South Elgin and Streamwood police departments.
