One person was shot late Wednesday morning outside a department store in the Loop, officials said.
The shooting involved an armored truck parked outside a Saks Off 5th, sources said. Police sources said one person was in custody after apparently being shot by the driver of the vehicle during an attempted robbery.
A cash bag could be seen still lying nearby as the scene was taped off.
Sarah Evans and two companions heard a first shot while on the sidewalk outside Target on State Street.
“We saw the Brink’s guy come out of the store,” Evans said, nodding at the Saks. “We saw the kid running off.”
Police did not immediately release any information on a suspect, including his age. Fire officials said one person was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Evans said she heard two more shots but didn’t see where they came from.
“We hit the ground at that point,” she said.
Evans, who is homeless, noted it was the second violent incident in recent days, recalling a recent stabbing she witnessed.
At a Chicago Board of Education meeting across the street, attendees were briefly told the building was on a “soft lockdown” because of the shooting. The meeting proceeded as scheduled, and the lockdown was lifted about 30 minutes later.
