
Garden to be dedicated Sunday in Danise Habun’s honor
The African American Coalition of Kane County will hold a garden bed dedication Sunday, Aug. 24, in honor of Danise Habun, an Elgin social activist and volunteer who died earlier this week.
The event will be held at 3 p.m. outside the Salient Lifestyle Center, 1141 Bode Road in Elgin, according to a social media post.

Habun, 68, who was being treated for cancer, was devoted to many Elgin-area and national causes and nonprofits. She died unexpectedly at her home sometime on Aug. 22 or 23.
The post calls Habun “a cherished friend who gave life and love to the city of Elgin. This living memorial will honor her care for every living thing. With every harvest, her love will be remembered and shared.”

Library holding panel discussion on immigration and due process
A panel discussion on the issues of immigration and due process will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. Elgin.
Participants will include Sara Dady, immigration attorney at Dady Law Group; Fred Tsao, senior policy counsel at the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights; and Jamie Mosser, Kane County State’s Attorney.
The event is sponsored by the library, the Leagues of Women Voters of Central Kane County and Elgin and the American Association of University Women Elgin Area Branch.

Police participating in Labor Day enforcement campaigns
The Carpentersville, Elgin and South Elgin police departments and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office are among more than 200 law enforcement agencies joining in campaigns to crack down drunken driving through the Labor Day weekend.
The state-wide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High Get a DUI” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns will be underway through the early Tuesday, Sept. 2.
Officers will be focused on stopping impaired driving, enforcing seat belt laws and reducing other dangerous driving behaviors, according to news releases issued by the departments.
The programs are funded through federal highway safety grant money allocated by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
New Geneva city treasurer sworn in to office this week
Emily Rosen was sworn in as the new Geneva city treasurer Monday after being nominated by Mayor Kevin Burns and approved by the Geneva City Council.
The appointment came after no candidates ran for the seat in the April election. In July, the city sought applications from Geneva residents with the requirements that they have lived in the city for at least one year, be a legal U.S. citizen and registered voter, have no felony convictions, and be current on taxes and city payments.
The treasurer’s primary responsibilities are to sign city checks, review treasurer’s reports, certify and sign off on required state financial filings, carry out necessary signatures on debt issuance documents, provide assistance to the finance director and serve on the police and fire pension boards. The position pays $225 a month.
Rosen grew up in Geneva and has a background in accounting, according to her application. The term expires May 4, 2029.
Elgin seeking public input on streets and sidewalk accessibility
An online survey and three September meetings will be conducted to obtain Elgin residents’ input on ways to improve street and sidewalk accessibility.
The information will be used for Elgin’s Americans with Disabilities Act Transition Plan, according to the city’s website.
The online survey is open through Oct. 1 and asks participants to share their experiences and ideas. An interactive map allows users to identify specific barriers and recommend locations for ADA upgrades. For the survey and map, go to engage.elginil.gov/ada-transition-plan.
Public input sessions will be held 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Gail Borden Rakow Library Branch, 2751 W. Bowes Road, Elgin; 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Ed Schock Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way; and 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at the Elgin Downtown Market on Riverside Drive.
