Days after Chicago police reported firing on a shooting suspect in the South Shore neighborhood, authorities on Tuesday said the suspect was indeed wounded and sought treatment at an area hospital before fleeing without treatment.
The update from police came following the shooting in the 2000 block of East 71st Street just after 2 p.m. Friday.
No injuries reported after police open fire during foot chase of shooting suspect in South Shore
Police initially stated that no injuries were reported when an officer chasing after a gunman fired a shot. That alleged gunman had fired on another unidentified person and was fleeing when the officer’s weapon discharged, police said.
But further investigation revealed that the gunman sought medical treatment at an unnamed hospital, but they left before they were treated. The person was not in custody as of Tuesday evening, police said.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, the police watchdog, was investigating the “specifics of this incident,” and the officers involved were placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days while the agency investigates.
