St. Charles Deputy Police Chief Rich Clark is going to be temporarily serving as the St. Charles Police Department’s acting chief, following a City Council vote Monday evening.

Clark was recommended by St. Charles City Administrator Heather McGuire, and the appointment was officially approved by the council on July 21. He is set to serve as acting chief from Aug. 1 until the position is filled by a permanent candidate on Sept. 15.

He currently works as the department’s deputy chief of Administration, per the city’s website.

Following the resignation of former chief James Keegan in March, the city has been conducting a national search for a new chief, a process that Mayor Clint Hull, members of the City Council and some city staff members participated in, according to past reporting.

In June, city officials said they made an offer to a candidate, but the individual had accepted a police chief job in another community, so they continued to recruit for the role.

Last week, the city announced that it had a likely pick for the role, Daniel J. Likens, who comes from the Illinois State Police. He’s set to be formally recommended for the role by McGuire at the Sept. 2 City Council meeting and assume the role on Sept. 15.

The department’s Deputy Police Chief Eric Majewski had been serving as interim chief while the search was going on.

Following Monday’s vote, Clark will take over the job from Aug. 1 until the city’s permanent pick takes over.
