A Winthrop Harbor woman who killed her boyfriend by running over him with a car has been sentenced to seven years in prison, Lake County prosecutors said Friday.
Candace Wrobel, 38, pleaded guilty Thursday to aggravated driving under the influence causing death in the March 2023 incident in which Cody Humphrey, 40, was killed.
According to police and court records, Winthrop Harbor police were called to Humphrey’s home in the 1300 Block of Sheridan Road on March 19, 2023, for a report of a domestic disturbance.
Officers found Humphrey beneath the vehicle Wrobel had been driving. He was brought to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. During Wrobel’s initial court appearance in 2023, prosecutors outlined a raft of broken bones and other injuries Humphrey suffered.
Authorities said that the couple had argued the night before, and that Wrobel returned Sunday a little after noon to Humphrey’s house. The pair ended up outside and Wrobel told police she “gunned” her car as she drove at Humphrey, throwing him onto the hood before running over him.
Humphrey, a Colorado native, was a 20-year U.S. Navy chief petty officer and was in the process of retiring from the service when he died. A family member said that the victim and Wrobel had been dating for about a year.
Under the terms of the sentence, Wrobel must serve 85%, minus 853 days of credit for time spent in the county jail awaiting trial.
