It’s been about 100 years since this party took place at 122 S. Brainard St. in the mid-1920s, but it would seem only the fashion has changed given that we still celebrate birthdays with cake and candles. These three sisters are, from left, Ruth, Peg, and Mabel Hammersmith, and their home is now known as the Hammersmith House, a residence hall on the North Central College campus. Interestingly, all three Hammersmith girls would graduate from NCC and go on to have long, interesting lives, according to online information about them. Ruth, who died at age 100 in 2017, was a librarian at the Nichols Library and a founding member of the Naperville Heritage Society. Peg, christened “Marguerite,” died in 2010 at age 95. She was a high school teacher in Michigan for 32 years before returning to Naperville and working as a reporter for the Naperville Sun and The (Aurora) Beacon-News. Mabel died in 2011 at age 92. She owned a design company specializing in book illustration and greeting card design and had a 20-year career as a program specialist for the Girl Scouts of the USA in New York, where she designed more than 110 Girl Scout badges, some of which were featured on a postage stamps commemorating the organization’s 75th anniversary.
