A suspect was arrested after a shooting inside the emergency room at Evanston Hospital Thursday night that left a security guard injured, Evanston police announced.

The hospital, located at 2650 N. Ridge Avenue in Evanston, was placed on lockdown as of 9 p.m. Thursday and its emergency room remained closed to new patients throughout the night, according to a hospital spokesperson and police.

The suspected gunman, a 28-year-old Evanston man, was brought to the suburban hospital after exhibiting symptoms of mental illness in downtown Evanston, police said in a news release.

Police said that during the intake process, the man became agitated, prompting a security guard to enter the room. During the encounter just before 8 p.m., “the man lunged toward his belongings and produced a weapon, which was discharged,” police said in the statement. The weapon fired three or four shots fired and the guard was wounded, but no other injuries were reported.

The guard suffered “non life-threatening injuries,” police said.

Additional security personnel and a nurse helped subdue the man and placed him in handcuffs until Evanston police arrived, authorities said.
