Former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley has put his two-bedroom condominium on the eighth floor of the Carlyle building on the Gold Coast on the market for $1.1 million.

Daley, 82, was Chicago’s mayor from 1989 until 2011. Since stepping down in 2011, he has kept a relatively low profile around town.

Daley’s housing moves at times have drawn significant attention. When he moved in 1993 from his native Bridgeport neighborhood to a new three-story rowhouse in the Burnham Place development on the Near South Side, the Tribune wrote that Daley didn’t defuse the issue and discuss his move with the media “because he’s peeved at suggestions that by moving from a neighborhood growing seedy, he’s somehow abandoning traditions and his legacy — and fully aware that there might be some political costs.”

However, Daley suffered no political costs from that move, and he remained in Burnham Place until moving into a three-bedroom rental unit in the Bloomingdale’s building in 2011 with his late wife, Maggie, shortly after he retired as mayor. He lived in several more units in the Bloomingdale’s building before paying $865,000 in 2015 for his eighth-floor spread in the Carlyle building.

Now, Daley is moving on from the 40-story Carlyle building, which was built in 1964. Listing agent Joelle Cachey Hayes of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate declined to comment.

Daley first listed the unit in November for nearly $1.14 million, and he reduced its asking price on Feb. 11 to $1.1 million.

According to listing information, Daley’s place was completely renovated in 2016 and has a marble foyer, detailed up-lit tray ceilings, two coat closets, east- and west-facing terraces, upgraded moldings, paneled doors, high-end hardware, solar shades and drapes, and a white kitchen with a Thermador double oven cooktop and warming drawer, a U-Line beverage refrigerator, a wet bar and a walk-in pantry. Other features include a large primary bedroom suite with a private terrace and a bathroom with a double bowl vanity and a steam shower.

The condo had a $15,848 property tax bill in the 2023 tax year. It also comes with a $2,132-a-month homeowners association assessment.

Daley continues to own a home on Lake Michigan in Grand Beach, Michigan.
