Chicago police arrested one person and are searching for another suspect after a retired Chicago police sergeant was shot in North Center Monday morning, Ald. Matt Martin, 47th, said.

Police said two people fired at the victim, 74, after he got out of his vehicle in the 2000 block of West Berteau Avenue around 9 a.m. The man suffered two gunshot wounds in his left arm and a graze wound in his neck and was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.

As rain poured down around noon Monday, about a dozen officers gathered outside a real estate agency at the southeast corner of Berteau and Lincoln avenues. A SWAT team set up a perimeter around the 4100 block of North Lincoln Avenue. On Berteau Avenue, between the real estate agency and a bank across the street, a red Jeep SUV was parked.

The SUV was surrounded on four sides by crime scene tape. The trunk and the driver’s door were both open.

A neighborhood resident in his 20s, Eric, said he saw a bunch of police cars and crime tape while going on a walk around 10 a.m. on Berteau.

Eric, who preferred that the Tribune not use his last name, said he learned from a person taking photos of the scene that someone had been shot. Around 1 p.m., Eric went on another walk.

“I go on a lot of walks throughout the day,” Eric said while standing at the intersection of Lincoln and West Warner avenues, which had crime tape running across it. “So I just thought I’d check in. I assumed that everything was going to be gone. I’m surprised to see lots of police still here.”

Eric said he moved to the area fewer than three months ago.

“I actually just bought a condo in this area,” he said. “I always thought this was a safer area. I’m sure stuff happens all the time that I don’t know about, but it was just kind of shocking to happen upon something like that.”
