A 51-year-old CTA employee was wounded Tuesday night outside the Howard Street station in a drive-by shooting on the North Side in the Rogers Park neighborhood, Chicago police said.

Shortly before 9:15 p.m., the victim was outside in the 7500 block of North Paulina Street when someone traveling in a white SUV open fired and fled the scene. The victim, identified as a CTA employee by police suffered a wound to the chest, and was taken in serious condition to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.

According to CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski, the CTA received a report of a disturbance on the street outside of the Howard terminal. According to preliminary information an on-duty employee was transported to a nearby hospital after being struck by a bullet from an unknown vehicle driving by.

Hosinski said CTA is working closely with CPD as they investigate this matter, including reviewing and providing any relevant security camera footage.

In a statement Tuesday CTA president Dorval Carter said, “This evening, we’ve learned of yet another violent criminal act involving the use of a gun, this time injuring one of our own. We are both saddened, and also in disbelief that we are once again having to address the topic of gun violence and public transit.”

Carter said an on-duty switch operator  was standing outside the terminal when an unknown vehicle drove by striking a nearby vehicle and the employee. The employee was transported to a nearby hospital in serious condition.

No one was in custody, and detectives were investigating.
