A teenage girl who went under the waters of Lake Michigan Friday before being retrieved by rescue workers has died, according to Cook County Medical Examiner Office records.
The girl, Cesia Ketchum, 15, of the 2600 block of Gabriel in Zion, died Friday night after she was transported to a Chicago hospital, according to the medical examiner’s office.
Autopsy results were pending, according to the office.
According to the Beach Park Fire Department, the girl was submerged in the water at Illinois Beach State Park when firefighters were called at about 5:45 p.m. Friday.
Authorities spoke to several witnesses who directed rescue personnel to the area in the water where Ketchum was last seen.
Beach Park and Winthrop Harbor rescue personnel entered the water and were able to locate the girl. Ketchum did not have a pulse, but paramedics were able to re-establish one during transport to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan, Beach Park firefighters said.
The girl was later transferred to Lurie’s Children’s Hospital in Chicago. She was pronounced dead about 11:45 p.m. Friday, according to the medical examiner’s website.
