Some Buffalo Grove-area children learned that not all heroes have capes and some like to stroll the aisles of local retail stores during the holiday, helping the kids purchase gifts for their family members and spread Christmas cheer.
“The holiday spirit was alive,” emergency responder officials said in a news release, telling of the Buffalo Grove police and fire departments teaming up for the annual “Shopping with Heroes” event.

On Dec. 2, police officers and firefighters assisted 11 “deserving” children in shopping for gifts for themselves, their families and loved ones at the Target store in Wheeling.
“The volunteer police officers and firefighters spent time shopping with the youth, encouraging the selection of both educational items and their desired gifts,” according to the release.
The children then gathered at the police department for where other volunteers helped with gift wrapping, and pizza and treats were served.
“Our first responders look forward to this event every year,” said police Chief Brian Budds. “We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the many volunteers who helped make the holidays special for kids in our community and their families.”
Officials stated in the release that the holiday shopping and pizza party were made possible by donations from the police department, Target, the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council and other “generous” donors.
