West Dundee honors man who stopped school fire spread
Chris Palmer, a project superintendent with Lamp Inc. of Elgin, has been presented with the West Dundee Fire Department’s Lamplighter Award for actions that prevented the spread of a fire at Dundee Middle School.
A fire broke out at the school on July 12 due to electrical equipment that malfunctioned, Fire Chief Michael Spiro said at the Aug. 12 village board meeting at which Palmer was honored.
Palmer, part of a construction crew working in the facility, jumped in to shut off the equipment’s power supply despite it unrelated to the work he was doing, thereby preventing the fire from getting larger, a new release said.
The Lamplighter Award was created by West Dundee Village President Chris Nelson to recognize people who go above and beyond the call of duty.
