The five members of the Barrington High School Scholastic Team were recognized by the Barrington Village Board for winning two national championships.

Michael Karpov, Rohan Kher, Charles Young, Colin Stewart, and Aarya Singh, Barrington High School “A” team members, won both the National Association of Quiz Bowl 2 and the Pace National Scholastic Championship this summer. It was the second time the team won the National Association of Quiz Bowl Tournaments. A total of 300-plus schools competed in the national Quiz Bowl event and in May, the team was paired with peers from Buffalo Grove High School setting the stage for an all-Illinois high school win, according to the proclamation read by Trustee Jason Lohmeyer at the June 26 Village Board meeting.

“The national field of entrants historically features many private and selective enrollment schools and being an open enrollment public school truly makes this second championship an exceptional, special and extremely rare achievement for the Barrington school district,” Lohmeyer read, adding this feat has only occurred six other times in history. “Barrington High School is only the second traditional open enrollment public school in the nation to have multiple national titles and one of only six schools to have ever won a unified national title.”

Lohmeyer said the student group has done “some amazing things” the past couple of years.

Other trustees also commended the scholastic team and the coach, including Trustee Jennifer Wondrasek who said Scholastic Team coach Jeff Price is a “gift to the school.”

In the Quiz Bowl, two teams compete on academic subjects ranging from history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, popular culture and sports in a buzzer competition, according to the National Academic Quiz Tournaments website.

The team was also named grand marshal of the Barrington 2023 Fourth of July parade.

Also at the board meeting, trustee reappointed Jim McGrath and Jennifer Lucas to the

Environmental Advisory Committee, both with terms ending in December 2025.

On a vote of 5-0, the board also authorized and approved awarding a contract to HBS of Wisconsin LLC or Heartland Business Systems for the purchase and installation of new computer servers, network storage equipment, licensing and technical support services.

The board also authorized issuance of up to $4 million in waterworks and sewerage revenue bonds to help pay for what officials consider necessary improvements to the Barrington’s waterworks and sewerage system.

And, trustees approved an intergovernmental agreement between Barrington School District 220 and the village for cooperative purchasing of fuel.
