Spring and early summer bring us countless choices for viewing fantasy or superhero films. In Chicago, another fantasy tale was spun to some North Side residents.
Ald. Timmy Knudsen (43rd Ward) emailed constituents — after two June robberies of DePaul students — to say that additional police units would be assigned to the area. A watchdog group’s careful check of police records revealed that, in truth, no police units at all were assigned to the areas around DePaul’s campus or Lincoln Park Zoo on a recent weekend. During that “down” (no patrol car) time slot, four men and a 17-year-old girl were hospitalized after a 4:40 am shooting near the zoo.
So, what’s the greater fantasy: that Spider-Man can forever keep his identity secret or that the mayor and interim Chicago Police Department Superintendent Fred Waller are actually addressing the increased violent crime on Chicago’s North Side?
