Four people were left homeless early Wednesday morning after a fire caused more than $150,000 in damage to their single-family home in the 3400 block of Caine Drive in Naperville.

The Naperville Fire Department responded to a call from one of the residents shortly after midnight about smelling smoke and basement smoke detectors going off, a news release said. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the basement and discovered flames burning through the subfloor and extending to the floors above, the release said.

It took about 25 minutes to get the fire under control and another hour to ensure all hot spots had been extinguished.

Only two residents were home at the time and escaped without injury, the release said. The house was deemed uninhabitable by the city’s Transportation, Engineering, and Development department.

The source of the fire is under investigation.
