A Chicago man who tried to hold up a delivery driver at a Naperville Jewel store using a 9mm semi-automatic rifle was found guilty of attempted armed robbery this week in a DuPage County bench trial.

Judge Mia McPherson also convicted Frederick Holmon, 32, of the 100 block of North Kilpatrick Avenue, of two counts of unlawful possession of weapon by a felon and one count each of attempted armed robbery with a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition by a felon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Holmon approached a beverage company delivery driver about 8:50 a.m. July 27, 2021, while he was unloading pallets of liquor and wine at a docking bay behind the grocery store at 1759 W. Ogden Ave., a DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office news release said.

Dressed in black and armed with the rifle, Holmon indicated he wanted the man’s valuables and told him, “It’s not worth your life.” Instead of complying, however, the victim ran toward a Jewel employee and yelled, “The guy’s got a gun,” the release said.

Holmon fled to a Chevy Suburban, which was parked in a nearby strip mall, and drove eastbound on Aurora Avenue. Naperville police stopped the vehicle a few minutes later near the Brookdale Road/Manchester Road area, the release said.

During a search of the Suburban, officers recovered not only the rifle but a 9mm extended magazine with sixteen rounds and a .357 loaded revolver with six rounds, the release said.

Holmon is being held in the DuPage County jail pending his next court appearance May 31 and sentencing. He faces 15 to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

“Brazen, violent gun crimes, such as those committed by Mr. Holmon, have no place in a civilized society,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in the release. “Judge McPherson’s guilt verdict today sends the message that in DuPage County, we will not tolerate such behavior and anyone who commits such a crime will be held accountable.”
