Elgin Mayor Dave Kaptain was leading Councilman Corey Dixon in his bid for a fourth term, incomplete voting results showed Tuesday night.

Kaptain had 57.39% of the vote to Dixon’s 41.13% with 13 of 56 precincts reporting in Kane County and all 13 precincts reporting in the Cook County portion of the city.

All votes are unofficial because of mail-in and provisional ballots won’t be counted until after the election.

A retired chemist with the Fox River Water Reclamation District, Kaptain was elected to the city council in 2005 and to his first term as mayor six years later. He touted his steady leadership and experience in water and wastewater during the campaign.

Dixon, an administrator with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, was elected to the council in 2017 and won reelection four years later. Dixon said he has a vision for the city and wants to focus on economic development, if elected.

Both agreed the biggest issues facing the city are continuing to replace lead water service lines, infrastructure, redevelopment and making sure Elgin is financially stable.
