Voters in Chicago cast their ballots Tuesday for mayor and alderman in 14 wards.
In the runoff races for City Council, six involve incumbents who didn’t exceed the 50% threshold, three of whom Mayor Lori Lightfoot recently appointed to the seats.

State Rep. Lamont Robinson set to become next alderman of the 4th Ward on the South Side
In the race to replace Ald. Sophia King, state Rep. Lamont Robinson appeared to be cruising to victory Tuesday over Prentice Butler, King’s chief of staff, in the 4th Ward, representing the South Loop, the Bronzeville lakefront neighborhood, Prairie Shores, South Commons and Kenwood.
Butler conceded Tuesday night. “I appreciate the time of service in the 4th Ward the last 12 years. I’m looking forward to the next phase, the next step of life,” he said. “I’ve learned so much in this campaign, and I thank the community for giving me the opportunity to serve the past decade.”

Small margin separates candidates in 5th Ward with future of Obama Center a key issue in the race
In yet another Chicago City Council race heralding a changing of the guard, two candidates late Tuesday were vying to represent the South Side lakefront’s 5th Ward that includes the University of Chicago and the future site of the Obama Presidential Center.
Desmon Yancy, a community organizer with the backing of major progressive groups, was stuck in a tight race with Martina “Tina” Hone, an attorney whose most recent job was heading up engagement for outgoing Mayor Lori Lightfoot. Voters are picking the successor to Ald. Leslie Hairston, who is not seeking a seventh term.

William Hall declares victory over Richard Wooten for 6th Ward alderman on the South Side
William Hall, senior pastor at St. James Community Church, declared victory Tuesday night over Gathering Point Universal Ministries pastor Richard Wooten as the next alderman of the 6th Ward on the South Side.
Hall will replace Ald. Roderick Sawyer, who chose not to run for another term when he made an ultimately unsuccessful bid for mayor..

She did so with the backing of former Mayor Richard M. Daley and his brother Cook County Commissioner John Daley, and the attendant political boost and baggage that come with their endorsements in the traditional Daley family seat of power.

Tight race in 21st Ward on South Side as former firefighter takes on community organizer
The South Side 21st Ward will see new City Council representation, with Ald. Howard Brookins Jr. stepping down in May after two decades, but who it is remains to be seen.
Retired firefighter Cornell Dantzler and community organizer Ronnie Mosley were in a tight race Tuesday. With 93% of precincts reporting, Mosley had 51% of the vote to 49% for Dantzler, according to unofficial results from the Chicago Board of Elections.

In the 24th Ward, a recently appointed incumbent whose family name represents a ward dynasty appeared poised to hold off a challenger making his second attempt at the seat.
With 95% of precincts reporting, Ald. Monique Scott held a commanding lead with 67% of the vote to challenger Creative Scott’s 33%, according to unofficial results.

Ald. Chris Taliaferro faces challenge from community activist C.B. Johnson in 29th Ward
In the zig-zagging 29th ward, which includes parts of Austin, Galewood and Montclare, former Chicago police sergeant Ald. Chris Taliaferro is seeking a third term in the face of a challenge from community activist C.B. Johnson.
Taliaferro, fresh off an unsuccessful run for a judgeship last year, was forced into a runoff by just a few dozen votes in the Feb. 28 election.

College administrator and former teacher vie for open 30th Ward seat
Vying for the 30th Ward seat vacated by longtime Ald. Ariel Reboyras are Ruth Cruz, an assistant director of admissions at Roosevelt University who also serves on Foreman High School’s Local School Council, and Jessica W. Gutiérrez, a former teacher and policy director for the Puerto Rican Cultural Center who’s the daughter of former U.S. Rep Luis Gutiérrez.
In the Feb. 28 election, Jessica Gutiérrez came in first, with nearly 38% of the vote, while Cruz was the runner-up, with 27%. The Northwest Side ward stretches across neighborhoods including Belmont Cragin, Old Irving Park, Portage Park and Avondale.

In 36th Ward, two-term Ald. Gilbert Villegas declares victory over CTU leader
Two-term Ald. Gilbert Villegas declared victory Tuesday over his challenger, a Chicago Teachers Union leader, in the 36th Ward — a teeter-totter-shaped ward drastically redrawn by City Council in a fit of political pique during last year’s ugly remap battle.

With 85% of precincts reporting, Villegas had 58% of the vote to Leonor Torres Whitt’s 42%, according to unofficial results.

Recently appointed Ald. Timmy Knudsen challenged by Brian Comer in heated 43rd Ward race
The race to represent the affluent 43rd Ward encompassing Lincoln Park and part of the Gold Coast has been among the most heated aldermanic contests this cycle.
Ald. Timmy Knudsen was appointed to the seat by Mayor Lori Lightfoot only about six months ago following the retirement of three-term incumbent Ald. Michele Smith. Knudsen faces a challenge lifelong ward resident Brian Comer, the head of the Sheffield Neighborhood Association. The two were the last to survive the six-way race in February.

Critiques of incumbent Ald. Jim Gardiner’s first term on the Chicago City Council went beyond the usual complaints about crime, business development and potholes.
He was dogged by controversies ranging from a reported federal investigation into whether he sought to withhold services in the 45th Ward from residents who opposed his agenda to leaked profane texts about political colleagues and alleged remarks likening detractors to “rats.” Gardiner denied targeting “any person for being critical of my representation of them in office” and apologized for those texts.
Despite those controversies, Gardiner won reelection, with runoff challenger Megan Mathias conceding two hours after polls closed Tuesday evening.

Angela Clay defeats Kim Walz in 46th Ward race to succeed retiring Ald. James Cappelman
Angela Clay won the the open race to succeed retiring Ald. James Cappleman in the North Side 46th Ward, with contender Kim Walz conceding late Tuesday.
With 96% of precincts reporting, Clay had received 56% of the votes to Walz’s 44%, according to unofficial results.

Progressive organizer faces affordable housing developer in lakefront 48th Ward
In the North Side lakefront 48th Ward, which includes part of Uptown as well as Edgewater and Andersonville, small business owner and progressive organizer Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth is running against affordable housing developer Joe Dunne after the two finished atop a crowded 10-way race in February.
Retiring Ald. Harry Osterman and many of the city’s major labor organizations endorsed Dunne, while progressives like mayoral candidate Brandon Johnson and several Asian-American elected officials backed Manaa-Hoppenworth, who is Filipina. Dunne finished with 26% of the vote to Manaa-Hoppenworth’s 23% in February.
