player ready...Brian Morrison managed a runner-up finish two years ago when he competed in the Oak Brook Park District’s Why Not Tri, a spring triathlon started in 2020 as a way to allow athletes to compete during the coronavirus pandemic.

Morrison, 40, an Oak Park resident, returned Sunday for his second Why Not Tri and won the competition.
“I like the variety of the workout, with three different things” he said, referring to a 400-yard swim at the Family Recreation Center, 2.5 miles cycling on an Air Assault Bike and a 1.5-mile run on a treadmill. The bike and run usually take place outside, but were held indoors Sunday, said Kara Smith, fitness supervisor for the Park District.
“With chilly weather, we decided to adapt and move the event indoors for the health and safety of our participants,” she said.
Morrison said he has enjoyed participating in Why Not Tri and hopes to return in the future.
“I like how they have it organized; they do a really good job,” he said.
Why Not Tri was open to everyone, but recommended by the Park District for those ages 12 and older. Heats began at 7:15 a.m., with six participants per heat.

Including Morrison, 21 people finished Why Not Tri. The results:
