An Elgin man charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding Friday damaged three vehicles, including a unmarked squad car, while trying to escape a traffic stop and was found hiding in a St. Charles gas station restroom, authorities said.

A Kane County sheriff’s lieutenant attempted to pull over Quenelle M. Franklin, 32, of the 1600 block of Mark Avenue, about 6:30 a.m. after he was seen committing several traffic violations near Randall and Crane roads in St. Charles, a news release said.

The officer, driving an unmarked squad, turned on his car’s lights and siren but Franklin did not stop and ultimately lost control of his Ford Escape after turning east off Randall Road on to Dean Street, the release said.

Two parked, unoccupied vehicles on North 9th Street were struck by Franklin’s SUV, with the impact pushing one of them into the path of the squad, according to the report.

The car was extensively damaged, but the officer not injured, the release said. Franklin left the scene on foot.

With the help of the St. Charles Police Department and a K-9 unit, officers tracked Franklin to the Shell gas station in the 300 block of West Main Street, where he was found in a locked bathroom about 9:55 a.m., the release said.

Franklin was arrested on three felony aggravated fleeing and eluding charges related to driving 21 mph over post limit, causing more than $300 in property damage and disobeying two or more traffic control devices.

He was also cited for speeding 35 mph over posted limit, disobeying a traffic control signal, failure to signal when turning, failure to signal when changing lanes and improper lane usage.

He is being held in the Kane County jail pending a bond hearing.
