The Clarendon Hills Library is hosting its first craft supply swap from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 21 at the library, 7 N. Prospect Ave.
“This is something I knew about from another library doing it a while back and have had the idea in the back of my mind,” said Lucy Tarabour, the library’s adult programming coordinator. “We thought it was a good thing to try in the new year.”
In preparation for the event, patrons may drop off unneeded craft supplies, such as fabric, specialty paper, supplies for drawing, painting, ink stamping, scrapbooking, jewelry-making and more at the library from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 19, and from 9:30 a.m. to noon Jan. 20.
Library staff will sort the supplies and open the building’s meeting room to the public at 10 a.m. Jan. 21 so that attendees may browse through the donated supplies and take what they like, Tarabour said.
“This is a great event for someone who knows they’re never going to finish that project they started ages ago, or someone who wants to try a new craft without spending a lot of money,” she said. “I know I’ve been guilty of getting excited about a project and then not finishing it. This also is a good way to help keep stuff out of the landfill.”
Tarabour said the library will be looking to donate leftover items.
Other special programs scheduled for January and February include a Korean lantern making workshop, from 1 to 2 p.m. Jan. 28.
The Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project will go through the step-by-step process of creating a lotus flower lantern, using colored paper and a premade wireframe. The craft is in-person at the library, and the presentation will be done virtually from New York.
Magic Mania with Magic by Randy is scheduled from 11:15 a.m. to noon Feb. 11 and includes an interactive magic show with storytelling, positive message and plenty of audience participation.
Middle School students will have the opportunity to take part in a soap-making workshop from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 18 during which they will be able to handcraft their own natural soap bar and learn about the history of soap making.
Some library programs require advance registration.
