The North Suburban YMCA Community Gallery is featuring the artwork of Leo Benvenuti and his son, Jack, through December.
The show, “Strength and Honor” comes from one of the artists’ favorite movies, “Gladiator,” according to a news release. The artwork is for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Y’s Visual Arts Program.
Leo Benvenuti has exhibited all over the world. With no preconceived idea or direction, Leo lets his subconscious spontaneously create something on a canvas, the release said.
He brushes, pours, scratches, spills, scrapes off, reapplies paint until he sees something appear. He then starts improvising with more detailed paint work, adding or taking away, until he feels it’s finished, according to the release.

Jack Benvenuti studied art at Cal State Northridge, the release said. His works create a commentary on innocence and experience and often have a satirical view of culture. He is part of the radical contemporary urban movement calling his style, “ironic graffiti.”
The NSYMCA’s Community Gallery, 2705 Techny Road, Northbrook, celebrates the diversely talented artists living and working in Chicago’s northern suburbs with free monthly exhibits that are open to the public.
