I just saw a great movie, “Till,” about the murder of a young Black man in 1955 and the racial injustice in our country during that time. All should be aware of this time in our country’s history, whether it be from reading about it in our history books or seeing and hearing about via the movies and other media. I do wonder if this is the kind of history that states like Florida and Texas would rather not be mentioned. America is at its greatest when it recognizes it’s faults and failures and corrects its mistakes, not hide them.

There is no doubt that democracy is our only hope for survival as a nation, and that the way to preserve it requires our citizens to turn out and vote. I would add one additional task. When citizens vote, I would urge them to vote for candidates who exhibit the following traits: sincerity, personal integrity, humility, courtesy, wisdom and charity. Our democracy will thrive and prosper for future generations with leaders who possess those traits.

Thought I would run over to the dispensary today. So I stopped at the next red light rolled down the windows and inhaled.

The average voter doesn’t understand the nuances of polling. For example, if a poll shows you with 43% and me with 40%, that does not mean you are ahead. Statistically speaking, we are tied. The reasons are simple. You are not outside the margin of error, you are not above 50% and undecided voters account for 17%. So unless your numbers can cover all three, you and I are in a virtual tossup.

I read a recent article in the Sun -Times regarding the fact there are no Black baseball players participating in the World Series this year. How many times have you watched college and or professional basketball game and not seen a white player on the court. I’m not sure if the article was meant to stir up emotions or that the journalist is that stupid.

A four-story building in old downtown Homewood, 32 rental units, retail restaurant and shop on the first floor. Where do tenants park 32 cars? Where does the new restaurant and shop patrons park? Where do the existing merchants now on the street park their customers? When the trains arrive, more cars. What were the city fathers of Homewood thinking when they allowed this building to be built? Time will tell. A true traffic nightmare is in the making.

Funny how in the last two weeks leading to the election, if you only pay attention to the TV commercials, the only issue facing Illinois voters is abortion. No economy, no prison reform, no taxes, nothing but abortion. Recently there were six commercials in a row and if you listen to them, everyone is a liar. Talk about sinking to a new low and pandering to emotion.

Thank you, the people of Brazil, for doing the right thing and getting rid of that President Jair Bolsonaro, as he allowed deforestation to go unchecked in the Amazon. Go green.

Tribune articles in the same edition, reporting on Chicago Public Schools progress or lack thereof, are confusing at best. One report advises of record graduation rates, while the same article criticizes CPS for a decline in math and reading proficiency. Are we just graduating more students, even though their education levels are dropping? We should never let politicians explain results. Graduation rates without a commensurate gain in proficiency are meaningless, despite what the governor says.

I give all the great hitters today a hats off. But the greatest of them all was Babe Ruth. He hit his homers with a dead ball. He was so good that he never was in good shape, a party everyday, beer and hot dogs and they’re playing around at night. Every game, fans came to see him hit went out. Pitchers never gave him a good pitch to hit. When you go to the park, look up at the sky and say, thanks Babe, for making the game of baseball great.

The Daily Southtown printed a very long six part article about the Tylenol murders that happened a long time ago. They have not paid much attention at all about the current Fentanyl drug overdose murders killing several thousand people every year. Fentanyl is coming to this country across our borders that look like candy gum drops.
Bill, Plainfield
Speak Out gave us multiple comments blaming GOP and Trump for the awful attack on Paul Pelosi by a homeless, drug addicted, mentally deranged person whose home is a bus with rainbow flag and BLM sign. How twisted must one be to blame that on Trump when DePape is the result (victim) of progressive policies in San Francisco?
David, Tinley Park
Ned of Tinley Park is right. So far, nothing’s worked to stop our shootings. Stopping them legally won’t work. How about doing it the DeSantis and Abbott way? We know these gangs broke the law. We know where they live. Why not let the police or National Guard round them all up and deport them, or at least jail them.

I just came back shopping from a Jewel store in Merrionette Park. It is the worst organized store I’ve ever been into. They had a real nice system before but it seems the executives from Utah decided to change everything around and it’s so disorganized it’s unbelievable. I mean, it takes you forever to find something where it used to be. So I think from now on I’m going to go to Mariano’s or maybe Aldi’s or Fareway. I’m going to kiss off Jewel after 30 years going there.
